Il governo italiano, nel 1942, aveva commissionato la produzione di orologi per i suoi piloti, ma il progetto non andò a buon fine. Anni più tardi Italo Fontana trovò, tra le carte del nonno Ilvo, alcuni documenti relativi ad un progetto per la realizzazione di orologi specifici per le forze navali italiane. Cominciando nel 2000, per sette anni Italo ha lavorato alla ridefinizione del concept di questi orologi. Il risultato è un brand, U-Boat , che propone pezzi artigianali caratterizzati dalla grande dimensione, dal largo quadrante di facile lettura in tutte le condizioni e da una larga corona posizionata sul lato sinistro dell’orologio. Ogni segnatempo è completamente disegnato e supervisionato da Italo nel suo laboratorio di Lucca.
Queste creazioni hanno conquistato molte personalità del jet set internazionale: tra gli estimatori ci sono anche Giorgio Armani, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Cruise, Kenzo, David e Victoria Beckham, Sylvester Stallone, James Blunt e Lindsey Lohan. Nell’arco di pochi anni U-Boat ha poi aperto 15 boutique monomarca e numerosi punti vendita in tutto il mondo

Brief Brand History for U-Boat:
U-Boat luxury watches by Italo Fontana are precision watches that are handcrafted in Italy. They were originally designed in 1942 for U-boat officers and Italian Air Force pilots and were intended to be easy to read but hard to destroy. Italo Fontana's grandfather, Ilvo Fontana was asked by the Italian Navy to create a watch that was large enough to be seen under any light or weather condition, but the order was never finalized. The 18k Gold collection includes the most famous 'U-Boat Flightdeck Chronograph' models, as well as some 'U-Boat' models. Each has an 18k Gold bezel or crown or both. The 'U-Boat Sterling Silver' collection includes the 'Flightdeck' as well, so you can choose your favorite precious metal. The 'U-Boat Classico' collection has many models besides the limited editions and the gold models. These include automatic mechanical movement, and some also include a chronograph feature. As with all of the U-Boat luxury watches, these include the specially designed date display and the stem at the 9 o'clock position.
