Molten salt batteries: pro and cons of this technology

A recent report aired on a popular italian TV programme titled " Renewables, the storage and battery revolution " generated great interest in the topic of molten salt batteries , painting them as an almost miraculous technology for energy saving and sustainable development.

We took the opportunity to clarify the issue: molten salt batteries are an interesting technology, but neither new nor perfect! They have been around since the 1970s and have many limits , including the need to be kept constantly at very high temperatures to work, leading to continuous energy consumption.
